BOTANICAL FACT SHEET

The citron tree is a small tree or shrub approximately 13 to 16 feet high that is not very robust and can even appear scrawny. It has an irregular habit and sparse foliage. The young branches are purple. Its large flowers, which are grouped at the end of the branches, are a persistent purple. Its fruit, the citron, is extremely large and has lemon yellow skin.

TRADITIONAL USES

The citron tree is well known for its medicinal virtues, and more particularly for its antiseptic, expectorant, antirheumatic, digestive, anti-poison and febrifuge properties. Today, it is mainly used to make candied fruit. The pulp, zest and juice of the citron are generally used in cooking, baking and confectionery.
